A manual fine bar screen is a screening device used in wastewater treatment plants to remove fine suspended and floating solids from incoming sewage or industrial effluents. It consists of a series of closely spaced vertical or inclined bars, typically with openings ranging from 6 mm to 20 mm, designed to trap smaller debris that passes through coarse screens.

The screen is usually installed at the inlet channel and requires manual raking or cleaning to remove the collected waste materials, such as plastics, rags, paper, and other fine solids. These screenings are then manually lifted and disposed of. Manual fine bar screens are simple in design, cost-effective, and suitable for small-scale wastewater treatment facilities or locations where flow rates are relatively low and automation is not economically viable.

Properties of Manual Fine Bar Screens

  • Bar Spacing: Fine bar screens usually have bar spacing between 6 mm to 20 mm, effective for capturing smaller debris.
  • Construction Material: Typically made of stainless steel or mild steel with coatings, ensuring durability and corrosion resistance.
  • Operation: Operated manually – screenings are removed by hand raking or similar tools.
  • Installation Position: Mounted vertically or at an inclination (generally 60°–75°) in the inlet channel for better hydraulic efficiency.
  • Simple Design: No moving mechanical parts; easy to fabricate, install, and maintain.
  • Flow Capacity: Suitable for small to medium flow rates in sewage or effluent channels.
  • Cost-Effective: Low capital and operational cost compared to mechanical screens.
  • Maintenance: Requires regular manual cleaning to prevent clogging and ensure uninterrupted flow.
  • Applications: Commonly used in small wastewater treatment plants, industrial effluent treatment plants, and in places where power supply or automation is not feasible.
  • Screenings Handling: Captured screenings must be manually collected, stored, and disposed of properly.
